Tommy Smith Leads Team USA Junior Qualifying after 6 games - Click HERE for Results

Tommy Smith Leads Qualifying, Andy DeCaluwe 5th, Kyle Larson 20th

I almost shat when Daniella sent this to me. Our own Tommy Smith is leading after the first round of 6 games at the USBC Junior Gold Tournament shooting a block of 1424 with games of 244, 289, 226, 221, 189, 255.

Andy D is in 5th with 1375, Kyle Larson is 20th with 1323, Sip is 110th with 1273, Steve Battersby 267th with 1164 and Joshua Thompson, Dee's summer league partner, 467th with 1100.

Tommy is ahead of 1,018 other bowlers...who would have thunk it?

The 11th annual Junior Gold Championships, which is being held at Sunnybrook Lanes, Sterling Lanes and Century Bowl, features a field of more than 1,700 of the best youth bowlers in the country competing for $100,000 in scholarships and spots on Junior Team USA.

The top four finishers who are U.S. citizens in the male and female divisions will earn automatic spots on Junior Team USA, serving as United States representatives in international competition in 2009. The National Selection Committee will choose four additional Junior Gold competitors, two males and two females, to join the 2009 team.

Qualifying continues Tuesday with the second of three six-game qualifying rounds. After 18 games, the top 105 males and 57 females (including all ties) will advance to the semifinals.

The semifinalists bowl 12 additional games on Thursday to determine the top 16 males and top 16 females who compete in the finals. The remaining bowlers compete in 16 games of match play Friday with the top male and top female declared U.S. Junior Amateur champions.

  1. im shocked to and excited but from what andy told me the shot seems a little to easy which is disappointing. When i bowled JOG if u went plus 50 or even you would be in great shape. Now i counted there are over 200 people at 200 or plus more which is pretty rediculous at least for a youth tourney where you are supposed to be bowling on tougher shots. I'm not knocking how good they are doing but just the fact that TOO many people are doing well. I hope they continue to do well i just thought id throw out there what i was being told.

  3. its always amazing how someone CAN $%$^$^%$%ING BASH the good that someone does. Who cares what they bowled on you still have to make shots and guess what THEY PRACTICE... they put the time in and everyone else who is bowling well... all those games takes a great mental game to stay focused.. it is not easy to stay focused sometimes and they are GETTING IT DONE. WTF can't you just be happy for them and not voice your opinion on how the shot is. It maybe easier but like i said they still have to make shots. Anybody who has seen the juniors bowl.. probably bowl better than most people. By the way they bowled World Team Challenge last week ... and they came in 3rd. so I think regardless of what they bowl on they are throwing the ball GREAT.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF THEM !!!

    KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK.

  4. Easy shot, hard shot, makes no difference they're all shooting on it....and shooting better than the other ~1500 bowlers out there. Damn impressive, period.

Looks like Game 7-12 are 1:30pm @ Century Bowl 7/08

    Games 13-18 are 8am @ Sunnybrook Lanes 7/09

Good Luck guys, keep it up!

  5. Looks like they are shooting qualifying on 3 different conditions.

Like Daniellllllllla said, who cares what shot it is...Lets just wish them the best...personally, I think Tommy is a big douche...(just kidding) I really like all of the guys and I think it is great we have 4 of our good buddies in contention. GO TOMMY SALAMI, KY, RUSS AND SIPSTER...

If any of them make the team, we will have to throw a parade in downtown Des Plaines...

  6. I agree with PJ, it's impressive no matter what they're shooting on. I hope they can keep it up...

  7. A true bowler would rather see a close match 180-179 decided by a spare instead of 300-279 because someone made a good shot and didn't carry. The shot matters because if it didn't they would put out a house shot but then they wouldn't get the true talent. But when people bowl on hard stuff they complain and so then they go back to easier shots. I blame USBC for not making things harder. I'm happy they are doing well I'm not knocking them I'm just upset by the fact that from the scores I see on there overall from the entire field that it seems a little to easy.

  10. You know, it's just peoples second nature to downplay when other people do something good. Dee, being a female...Russ, being left handed, and myself, I guess being fat, we've all had people try to diminish our accomplishments. Anyways, Tommy is now is 18th overall after 12 games. If Andy said the shot was easy the first day, it must of got REAL TOUGH on day two because he went from 230 avg day one to a 193 avg and 40th place on day two. The thing is, I'm sure each bowler has to bowl 6 games at a different center in different blocks, so while leading after one block is still something to be proud of, you really have to look at the 24 game set in the end.

Good job guys, good luck on day three...keep up the good bowling.
